Keeping Your Trailer Secure
Your trailer turns nearly-impossible jobs into simple work, but there might be others looking for that same advantage. Like any vehicle, trailers are targets for potential thieves, so there are a few measures you should take to keep it secure. We here at Countryside Trailer Sales want your trailer to remain yours, so we’ve put together some tips for preventing trailer theft. Customize It
If your trailer looks like any other factory-fresh model it’s going to be more difficult to tell it apart from others. But if you alter the appearance or upgrade it in ways that are specific to your tastes and needs, it becomes unique. The more customized your trailer is, the easier it is to claim it as yours. A new paint job, stickers with favorite teams or your name, and other unique identifiers are useful when picking your trailer out of a lineup, so to speak. Consider also placing unique identifiers out of sight where only you’ll know to look for them.
Storage
Where you store your trailer plays a big part in whether or not it ends up in someone else’s hands. Never leave it unhitched in a driveway or on the street! Try to park your trailer in a locker shelter like a garage, barn, or shed, or just get it out of view. Even throwing a cover on it to hide the precise make and model can help deter theft—after all, a potential thief isn’t likely to try and steal something they can’t evaluate beforehand.
If you don’t have a secure spot, do your best to park the trailer strategically. A well-lit, high-traffic area will help prevent theft, since there’s more chances that the theft would be witnessed or otherwise caught. It can also help to place the hitch up against a wall or fence, when possible, to make it harder for someone to hitch your trailer to their own vehicle.
Upgrade The Locks
For a little extra ease of mind, consider adding a hitch lock or a wheel boot. A hitch lock is a sturdy, two-part box that will combine over the coupler, one above and one below. This will make hitching without the lock’s key next to impossible.
A wheel boot, however, clamps to a wheel and prevents the wheel from turning at all. That will prevent the trailer from going anywhere, even if it’s hitched. Just make sure you buy a lock that can’t be pried open or sawed off.
